Carpet & Floor Cleaning Questions Answered

24 honest answers from a working professional and industry trainer — equipment, drying times, stains, costs and more.

Last updated: July 2026

These are the questions customers across Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Lincolnshire actually ask — answered plainly by Craig Carnan, owner of iClean 24/7 and trainer to cleaning professionals across the UK. If your question is not here, ask us directly — 24/7.

Equipment & Methods

Electric (portable) machines plug into your home’s sockets, which limits their heat, pressure and vacuum power. A truckmount is a dedicated system built into a van, powered by its own engine — delivering consistently hotter water, higher pressure and far stronger extraction. The result is a deeper clean and much faster drying. Read more on our why choose us page.
America is where professional carpet cleaning was industrialised, and truckmount systems are the accepted standard for professional work there — portable electric machines are treated as supplementary tools. iClean 24/7 runs an American-built Blueline Thermal Wave 2 HP, a high-end watercooled truckmount, bringing that professional standard to Grimsby and Lincolnshire.
Pressurised hot water is injected deep into the carpet pile, agitated with counter-rotating brushes, then extracted at high power along with dissolved dirt, bacteria and allergens. It is the deepest clean available for carpets and works superbly on tile and grout too.
A specialist solution is worked into the carpet that crystallises around soil particles, which are then removed by vacuuming. Because it uses minimal water, carpets dry in as little as 30 minutes. Craig teaches this method to cleaning professionals nationally through his industry training course.
It depends on the carpet, the soiling and your circumstances — which is exactly why iClean 24/7 carries both. Heavy soiling suits truckmount hot water extraction; homes and offices needing fast dry times suit low-moisture encapsulation. Every job starts with a free assessment, and the method follows.
No. Hire machines are low-pressure, low-heat and low-vacuum — they often leave carpets overwet and full of detergent residue, which attracts dirt back quickly. A professional truckmount extracts many times more water and soil. Hire machines have their place for light freshening, but they are not comparable to professional equipment.

Drying Times & Practicalities

With truckmount hot water extraction, most carpets are dry within 2 hours — the powerful vacuum recovery removes far more water than portable machines. Low-moisture encapsulation dries in as little as 30 minutes. Deep-pile carpets can take a little longer. We always advise a realistic time before starting.
A single room typically takes 30–60 minutes including setup, pre-treatment and grooming. A whole house is usually half a day. Commercial premises are surveyed first so we can give an accurate schedule — including out-of-hours work at no premium.
Move small and fragile items if you can. Larger furniture can usually be worked around or carefully moved and protected — just mention it when booking so the right amount of time is allowed. After cleaning, furniture should stay off damp carpet until dry.
Yes. We use biodegradable, non-toxic professional solutions. Once the carpet is dry it is completely safe. We advise keeping children and pets off the cleaned area for 30–120 minutes depending on the method used.

Stains & Results

Most stains respond very well to professional treatment — individual pre-treatment with stain-specific chemistry is included as standard. The older and more set a stain, the harder complete removal becomes. We are always honest at the pre-clean survey about what is achievable before any work begins.
Yes. Enzyme-based treatments break down the source of the odour rather than masking it — effective on both carpets and upholstery. Old, repeated soiling that has reached the underlay may need additional treatment, which we assess honestly on site.
Yes — but wool needs wool-safe chemistry and correct temperatures, which is where inexperienced cleaners cause shrinkage or colour damage. Every iClean 24/7 job starts with fibre identification so wool, nylon and natural-fibre carpets each get the treatment they need.
Two culprits: detergent residue and wick-back. Underpowered machines leave sticky residue that attracts new dirt, and moisture left deep in the pile carries old soiling back to the surface as it dries. Powerful extraction and proper rinsing — what a truckmount does — prevents both.
For most homes, every 12–18 months keeps carpets healthy and extends their life. Homes with pets, children or allergy sufferers benefit from annual cleaning. High-traffic commercial carpets typically need cleaning every 3–6 months — maintenance contracts are available.

Beyond Carpets

Yes — all fabric types plus leather conditioning. Fabric is identified first, then cleaned with the appropriate method and chemistry. Most upholstery is dry within 1–2 hours. Enzyme treatments handle pet odours at the source.
Yes — with a specialist strip, deep clean and reseal process using LVT-safe chemistry that will not void your warranty. It restores the factory finish; the reseal typically lasts 12–18 months in homes.
Yes. Diamond abrasive honing physically removes scratches and acid etching — the only genuine fix, as no cleaning product can do this. Floors are then polished to your chosen finish and sealed. See marble polishing, limestone polishing and stone floor restoration.
Yes — evenings, overnight and weekends at no premium. With low-moisture methods, office carpets are dry well before staff arrive. iClean 24/7 serves offices, care homes, schools, hospitality and retail across Lincolnshire, with maintenance contracts available.
